One Direction

The race for No 1 US Movie during Labor Day weekend is on and looks like it's heading in One Direction!

The 3D concert film about the hit British boy band has grossed $17 million in its first three days to top the three-day chart, putting it on course to score one of the best Labor Day openings of all time. The film, costing a modest $10 million to make, is a needed win for Sony.

 So Far One Direction grossed $14.5 million from 53 markets -- including a No. 1 debut in the U.K. with $5.7 million.

 Simon Cowell  assembled the boy band after the musicians appeared as solo acts on the U.K.'s The X Factor. The members of the band are Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles andLouis Tomlinson One Direction, opening in more than 2,500 theaters domestically  was the result of collaboration among various divisions of the sprawling Sony Corp. empire, including the feature film division, music and electronics.

  One Direction's two albums Up All Night and Take Me Home, released in 2011 and 2012 respectively, broke several records, topped the charts of most major markets, and generated hit singles, which include "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young".

 The band was propelled to success by Social Media. The group have sold 19 million singles and 10 million albums and  Their achievements include two BRIT Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards.

 According to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012. They were proclaimed 2012's "Top New Artist" by Billboard. By April 2013, the band had an estimated personal combined wealth of £25m.
